Who should take this Class?

This class is for the individual wanting to gain the knowledge and marksmanship skills to legally, ethically, and effectively defend themselves in a lethal encounter. This class is essential for the new concealed carry permit holder or homeowner with a home defense firearm. In addition to the practice guide, students will receive a guide to the current Georgia concealed carry laws.

Threat Identification and Avoidance

If you identify the threat early and avoid the fight - you have already won the fight. Identifying and avoiding the threat involves changes in your lifestyle. The changes are small but profound. One of the most educational activities in this regard is learning to read people - particularly law - abiding citizens as they go about their daily lives. We teach you some basic techniques to increase your awareness of your surroundings and how to identify inappropriate and potentially threatening behaviors in those around you.

Preparedness - The Combat Mindset and Planning for Survival

Having an effective plan and executing the plan with speed and a determination to survive is as important and perhaps more important than possessing expert level marksmanship skills. Mental preparation for self defense is a critical skill. The development and exercise of mental toughness combined with ruthless determination is essential for effective self - defense in a lethal encounter. It takes time to develop mental toughness, but a consistent approach to training your mind will prepare you to respond effectively during a crisis.

Dealing with High Stress Situations Such as a Lethal Encounter

Confronted with someone willing to kill you for a few bucks, your adrenal glands do a major dumb into your blood stream, your heartbeat and blood pressure go off the charts, the color drains from your extremities and your face, a sudden surge of catecholamines flush the neurons in your brain and your IQ drops 50 points. The result is a series of neurological, psychological, and physiological phenomena manifesting themselves during your encounter - some of which help your performance - most of which impedes your performance. Being familiar with these phenomena can minimize the negative effects and maximize the effectivness of your response.

The Legal Triggers

When is it appropriate to use deadly force to stop a threat?  There are four thresholds of threat behavior that must be crossed by the perpetrator before you can legally use deadly force to defend yourself. Since every situation is different, this portion of the class often develops the most discussion between instructors and students. Developing the judgment to recognize when these thresholds are crossed in any encounter with an assailant involves criteria that is both common to the laws in nearly every state in the union and with specific situations defined acceptable by the laws of the State of Georgia.  We cover this issue in some detail.

Preparing for the Aftermath

Your assailant is down and you are still standing. You have physically survived the fight, now its time to legally and mentally survive. Proper preparation for the arrival of law enforcement can prevent the tragedy of an innocent person - you - from legal and even physical harm at the hands of law enforcement. Remember those physiological effects? They are going to harm you legally and psychologically even after the fight is over if you are not prepared. Cognitive interference is common with high stress situations and will affect your statement. Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are common after such an event. Identifying the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the first step toward healing your psyche. We help you navigate this jungle.

Equipment

Successful defense follows a formula:   Skills + Mindset + Equipment = Survival.  You need to think of effective self defense as a system that follows this formula. Equipment that enables to you to securely and covertly carry, yet enable efficient access and employment of your firearm is a major factor in survival. How best to carry? There are many methods of concealed carry and you need to be aware of the pros and cons of each method. We overview the equipment and comfort of the various options.

 Range Day

Range day starts off with a review of basic marksmanship skills and then follows a defined syllabus of foundational practical pistol skills, each new skill building on the previous one. By the end of the day students will be performing react drills while drawing and gunning on the move, reloading on the fly, rapidly clearing malfunctions, engaging multiple targets with rapid follow-on shots, and exercising target discrimination skills.
