Pistol Shooter Improvement Curriculum Block I

Who Should Take This Class:

This class is of interest to concealed carry pistol permit holders, and those who are comfortable with their pistols and have achieved basic marksmanship proficiency who are looking to acquire new skills applicable to self-defense and practical shooting competition situations and venues. Practical shooting enthusiasts will also find this an excellent "Return to Basics" class.  Law Enforcement personnel who are looking to broaden their pistol skills or looking for a refresher course will also find this course valuable. This course is occasionally offered in a class or clinic format but can be attended as a private or small group class.  Expect to spend a full day at the range.

Note: This is not an approved NRA Course nor does it qualify for CE credits for Law Enforcement Personnel.

Overview and Course Goals:

Upcoming Classes

Available Mondays and Saturdays in April

Private instruction format only

$200 / 7 hours instruction

This is a one day course with small class sizes to provide for individual instruction.  The learning objective of the lesson plan states:  "The purpose of this course is to provide the customer with practical pistol shooting skills which will form a foundation which, with further student practice,  provides significant improvements in the student's speed and accuracy in practical shooting situations."   The course consists of a series of exercises that impart the foundational skills required for effective self-defense marksmanship or competitive match performance.

Dry Fire Exercises:

This curriculum begins with, and incorporates throughout, dry fire practice (practice of the skills without actually shooting). Dry fire practice is the secret of competitive pistol shooters - so much so that many consider their range time simply a confirmation of the efficacy of their dry fire practice. Nearly all skill sets taught in this clinic will begin with dry fire practice for two reasons: One, it allows the student to concentrate on the mechanics of the new skill without the distraction of the "bang" and recoil. Two, this in turn makes the live fire practice much more effective and satisfying since the student, having practiced the mechanics, can spend more brain capacity on marksmanship. Safety issues with dry fire practice will be thoroughly overviewed and the student will receive a dry fire safety practice guide.

Smooth and Fast Draws from the Holster:

By definition, concealed carry holders must defend themselves by drawing the firearm from the holster. Drawing from the holster, if not done correctly, is fraught with opportunities for a negligent discharge leading to injury. Additionally, drawing from the holster if not done correctly, can increase the risk of the firearm being taken away from you in close combat situations, can impair your ability to respond effectively in close quarters with effective shots, and can be significantly slower than your true potential for getting the first shot off. Correct and effective drawing is covered at the beginning of the course and you practice it with each exercise during the course.

Basic Marksmanship Overview:

You can't miss fast enough to win the fight. It doesn't matter how big a gun you have if you can't hit the target. Thus every Atlanta Firearms Training course starts with a review of basic marksmanship skills including overviews of sight alignment, sight picture, grip, stance, trigger control and follow through. This portion of the course serves as a warm-up in preparation for learning more advanced skills.

Multiple Shot / Follow-up Shooting:

Unlike on TV and in the movies, the vast majority of assailants are not dropped by the first shot. Thus rapid follow-on shots are necessary until the threat is removed. Recognizing this reality, most practical shooting competitions will require more than one shot on a target, thus developing the skills for rapid, accurate follow-on shots is necessary for proficiency.  Most novice shooters with basic proficiency can shoot fast, but not fast and accurately at the same time. There are specific skills that enable highly proficient shooters to shoot fast with accuracy. In fact the speed of the best masters can rival the cyclic rate of automatic weapons. We teach you the foundational skill.

Fast Target Transitions:

Many real life self-defense situations involve multiple criminals willing to take down you and your family if necessary to obtain what they want.  Possessing an ability to execute on multiple targets with speed and accuracy is essential to survival in these situations - you are just as dead if you are shot by the second criminal you engage as you would be if you were shot by the first criminal. Additionally, nearly all practical shooting competitions involve multiple targets. There are fast methods and slow methods of transitioning from one target to another. We teach you the right way - the fast way.

Tactical and Emergency Reloads:

Special Ops soldiers often offer this wisdom:  "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast."  Fast reloads is one area where this axiom is particularly applicable where quickly getting back in to the fight after running out of ammunition could save your life. There is a fast way, a slow way, a right way, and a wrong way to accomplish the replenishment of your ammunition. The fast way is not what you might think. We teach you the fast - correct way that enables you to maintain situational awareness of what your assailant is doing while accomplishing a timely reload.

Target Discrimination:

Self-defense and competitive practical pistol shooting is as much a mental game as it is a physical skills exercise. As a concealed carry pistol holder you are held to a higher standard of safety than the criminal - you can't just spray rounds around indiscriminately. You must be able to differentiate between the innocent and the criminals and avoid shooting innocent bystanders. If you are shooting competition, some targets will have "hostages" intermixed with them requiring thinking and discrimination before you pull the trigger. In this course you will exercise on specifically designed command targets that require that you think, identify and transition to, before you pull the trigger. This exposure to this requirement, especially when practiced in practical shooting competitions such as IDPA and IPSC, prepares you to make appropriate decisions in actual self-defense situations.

Shooting While Moving:

Its a lot harder for a criminal to hit you while you are moving. Conversely, its a lot harder for you to hit the criminal when you are moving (hopefully away from the criminal!). Shooting effectively on the move requires proficient use of all the fundamentals of practical shooting. Certain techniques dramatically improve your accuracy when shooting on the move. Situational and tactical considerations apply also and are overviewed.

Shooting From Cover:

The uninitiated almost always shoot from cover wrong if they have received no instruction. The requirements are protection, effective accuracy when shooting, and flexibility in tactical movement. Do it wrong and you rob yourself of one or more of these abilities. You will shoot from cover the correct way - the way that ensures protection, accuracy, and tactical flexibility.

Summary Exercises:

The previous exercises provide the foundational skills for effective and accurate shooting in dynamic situations - the only final requirement is to put them together in a cohesive whole. The last two exercises are shooting scenarios designed to allow you to put together the skills previously learned in a cohesive manner.
