Introduction to the AR-15 Rifle
Basic Tactical Skills Course | Who Should Take This Class:
AR15 rifles are flying off the shelves. If you are like us - you bought one (or yet ANOTHER ONE) for an "investment" - ok, heck, we bought another for the pure fun of shooting it and you probably did also. If this is your first AR15, this course is for you. More and more AR15 owners are looking at this rifle as a viable alternative to a shotgun for home defense with its lighter recoil but devastating power at close ranges. New AR15 owners will find this course an invaluable introduction to the care, safe handling, and feeding of the AR-15. Note: This NOT an NRA approved class. Please see below for round count, tuition fee, and an important safety note.

| Overview and Course Goals:
This course will provide you with the knowledge and confidence to enjoy and maintain your AR15 properly. This course is designed to lay down a foundational set of marksmanship skills oriented to self-defense purposes. Development of this course was coordinated with our Tactical Instructor, Chris Avery to ensure the acquisition of proper skill sets necessary for our Advanced Tactical Carbine courses and is a prerequisite to those courses if you do not have law enforcement or military backgrounds.

You do not have to own an AR-15 for this course - we have a limited number of rifles for rent at a very reasonable fee. Please notify us in your registration if you need a rifle. |

| Rules of Safe Firearms Handling:
Nearly all accidental injuries and deaths from negligent firearm discharges violate one or more of the rules of safe gun handling. Safe gun handling involves knowing the safe gun rules, developing a safety attitude, and integrating habitual safety awareness every time you pick up a firearm. Safety is paramount and this is why it is the first segment taught. It doesn't end here - AFT instructors reinforce safety concepts throughout the course in order to help you "habitualize" firearm safety practices. Throughout the course students will be expected to practice safe firearm handling skills.
AR15 History, Construction, Design, and Function:
This segment introduces the history of the development of the AR15, its design philosophy, and modern construction techniques. Surprised that a military service rifle is chambered for the small .22 caliber round - the same size as the "introductory" 22LR rifles we shot as kids? We will tell you the ballistics reasons for it and the limitations on effectiveness of that caliber. Why is it designed to be modular? - To accessorize it! We will overview many of the popular add-ons and accessories for the AR-15 including optical, electronic, and red-dot sights.
Ammunition Types:
Put the wrong type of ammunition in your firearm, pull the trigger and you just may be getting a very expensive ride to the emergency room. Guess what - the AR15 comes in a variety of calibers and types of ammunition within some calibers. In this segement these options are overviewed so that you will understand the options appropriate for your rifle type. |
| Shooting and moving is a difficult but essential tactical
skill. Students will have the opportunity to shoot while
moving in various directions. Here Chris coaches a
student through a moving drill while ensuring he doesn't
fall if he stumbles. |
| Firearm Cleaning and Storage:
During the course of a range session, gunpowder residue builds up in nearly every nook and cranny of the firearm. Both copper plated and lead bullets leave deposits in the barrel. If the firearm is not cleaned, over subsequent range sessions these deposits not only begin to hamper the functionality of the firearm, in some firearms they can cause major malfunctions that can be dangerous to the shooter. Proper firearm maintenance is critical to ensure the continued accuracy and safety of your firearm. This segment overviews proper firearm cleaning materials and the proper procedure for cleaning a pistol. You will have an opportunity to clean a semi-automatic pistol under supervision. Once cleaned you will want to store your pistol so that only authorized users have access to both the pistol and ammunition. If you are using your pistol for self defense purposes, ready storage which accomplishes the same goals is required. AFT instructors will overview safe gun storage practices, tools, and equipment so you can make an intelligent choice in firearm storage options.

| Range Day:
The information learned in the class module will be put to practice at the range. you will receive individual attention as you learn to fire your AR-15 proficiently. Your instructor will work with you until you are able to demonstrate proficiency in the fundamental skills in accurate rifle shooting. You will start out shooting at blank cardboard, concentrating on grip, sight picture, trigger squeeze and follow through. Once these are practiced an M4 sighting-in target will be introduced adding accuracy to the challenge. After sighting in at 25 yds, we will embark on a programmed curriculum of skill sets, with each skill set building on the other as you shoot through each string of live fire. By the end of the day you will have experienced a foundational set of shooting exercises that you can use to build marksmanship skill through practice which will prepare you for advanced tactical carbine handling skill acquisition.
Again this course is a prerequisite for attending our M4 Advanced Tactical Carbine Course if you do not have Law Enforcement or Military backgrounds.
Length of Course: One day
Round count is 300 rounds.

| Safety Note to our Students!
Do NOT purchase Ultramax remanufactured ammunition for this course!
We have had multiple malfuctions of this ammunition during this course. An example is included to the right. During the cycling of the student's gun the neck tension on the round was insufficent and the bullet was pushed back into the case. If this case had made it into the chamber and was fired, there could have been a catastrophic failure resulting in destruction of the weapon and injury to students - especially the shooter.
We will not be responsible for any damage or injuries resulting from the use of Ultramax ammunition for this course. |
