  Welcome to Atlanta Firearms Training.

Who We Are

Atlanta Firearms Training is a locally owned and operated training company founded by two airline pilots who are long time shooters and combat pistol competitors. We are NRA Certified Instructors for pistol, rifle, and shotgun. We also contract with highly skilled firearms instructors to assist us to provide the very highest levels of firearms training in basic and advanced pistol, rifle, and shotgun skills. For a more detailed description of our company please go to our "About" page. For biographies of our instructors go to our "Instructor" page. We got our start after repeated requests for personal training. In considering these requests, we discovered a need in the Atlanta Metro Area for high quality, professional firearms training emphasizing personal attention and high levels of customer service and so founded our company with the goal of outserving other training providers in the Atlanta area. The following email from one of our customers is typical but you can read more testimonials by clicking here:  Testimonials.

NRA Basic Rifle Course August 28 and 29

Atlanta Firearms Training will be conducting an NRA Basic Rifle Class August 28 and 29. This course is appropriate for new rifle owners, those thinking about purchasing a rifle, and as a refresher course for owners who have not shot in a while. Day one is an academic day following the NRA curriculum covering all aspects of rifle shooting, including gun safety rules, types of rifles, rifle features and functionality, the construction, composition, and types of rifle cartridges, basic marksmanship skills, safe storage practices and cleaning and maintenance. Additionally we will cover the type of optics available for various rifles, and their use including the basics of using mil-dot scopes for range estimation. Day two will establish basic marksmanship skills using a low-power .22 caliber rifle, then the students will have the opportunity to fire various rifles in calibers up to .308 out to 100 yd targets.  Class size is limited to 6 students due to range availabilty and to provide for personal attention. You do not have to own a rifle to take this class.  For a more detailed description of this course and to register, please go to our NRA Basic Rifle page here.

Introduction to the AR-15  July 17th, 2010

After Action Report

What started out as a mild day quickly turned into a very hot and humid day. We had an eclectic mix of students from various backgrounds ranging from a couple who had already taken some private AR-15 instruction with us to one student who had never shot a firearm before. Chris Avery - our instructor, was his usual efficient self, demanding, begging, and cajoling, high levels of performance from our students while eliciting smiles and even laughs with his running commentary. By the end of the day our students were conducting basic tactical drills with the AR-15 appropriate to home defense issues. All went home with in-depth knowledge of their weapons and new shooting skills.

Sometimes, as an instructor, you come across someone whose innate ability with a firearm leaves you shaking your head in wonder at their performance as shot after shot punches through the middle of the target. One such student in this AR-15 class was Pamela J.,  a 15 year old Brit on holiday in America, whose family arranged for her to take our course. When Chris called me and told me about this potential student WITH NO PREVIOUS FIREARM EXPERIENCE, I had some reservations about having her in such an advanced class, but Chris assured me we could work with her and ensure her safety and the safety of the class.  I need not have worried as she followed Chris's instruction to the letter and quickly found confidence with her ability to handle the weapon - so much so that by the end of the course she was doing immediate action drills and putting rounds into fist-size groups from 15 yds out, and putting rounds into center mass while shooting on the move.  We were fortunate to have Chris's brother in arms, Special Ops team member and spotter in Iraq visit us during the class and they both remarked about the amazing ability of Pamela J. So, how much of a good time did a 15 year old female Brit with no previous firearm experience have Saturday?  She was kind enough to write us a summary of her experience:

"I arrived on the intro to AR-15 course with trepidation, being a young female with no previous firearms experience. Add to this that I am a visiting Brit and you can imagine what fears may have been swirling around in my mind. However all my fears were assuaged by the unfeigned considerateness and quiet efficiency of my two new heroes, Brian and Chris. Not only do these two great men have an awe-inspiring level of technical knowledge but they seem to be omnipresent when you are effectuating your shooting drills, which is reassuring for a novice such as me. "

"I can honestly say that at the end of the course I didn’t want to go home, as I was having such a pleasureful time, but as Chris is clearly hard as nails , I thought I better not give him too much trouble and went home without so much as a whimper. :-))   No but on a serious note I know that testimonials can sometimes seem contrived, but please be assured that my experiences were real and my sentiments heartfelt, I can’t wait to get back to AFT and share another enjoyable time with the nicest people I have “ever” had the pleasure to meet."        Pamela J.

We try to maintain a diligent focus on customer service here at Atlanta Firearms Training and we work hard to maintain and advance both our personal firearms skills and our instructional skills. When you get feedback like this, you realize that the customer focus does pay off and that all the hard work is worth it. We immensely enjoyed not only working with Pamela but all of the students in our AR-15 class. It is very gratifying for us to see our students improve during the day and find the smiles on their faces.

Long Range Precision Rifle   July 10, 11, 2010

After Action Report:

Saturday started out mild when Chris and I arrived at 0730 to set up the day's instruction but by 1 PM it was a typical summer day in Georgia. Students started arriving at 0830 and we got immediately down to business. I spotted and helped Chris call wind while the students shot. The students had established their 100 yd zeros the day before and we began by confirming those zeros at 100 yds. Once confirmed, we moved them out progressively in 100 yd increments using the ballistics tables Chris custom developed for each student's rifle and cartridge. Excitement built during the day as student after student gained confidence in their ballistics tables when they made first shot hits on every target out to 700 yds. Mid-day we got a small thunderstorm but we continued to shoot through the rain - a valuable lesson in the effects of rain on external ballistics. The students saw that rain had virtually no effect as they continued to put first round hits on steel plates out to 700 yds through a strong downpour -(and I got soaked as I was not under the awning!). By the end of the day everyone had reliably hit the 700 yds targets, gained a tremendous amount of confidence in their ballistic data, and also in their newfound skills. I had the satisfaction from behind the spotting scope of calling the hits and seeing the resulting large smiles on each student as the good news was received. It is our pleasure to work with our students in helping them build the skills the seek in courses like this. We take great satisfaction at seeing the smiles and the excitement of our students as they discover new confidence and abilities. We hope that you will seriously consider training with us for your firearm skill needs.
